Ka Mana o Ka Wāhine: Hawaiian Women in Historical and Contemporary Frameworks

Facilitated byUniversity of Hawaiʻi - Mānoagraduate Brigitte “Gigi” Leilani Axelrode.

This workshop will be presented in English with ASL interpretation provided by Comprehensive Service Center, with fiscal support from Hawaiʻi Interpreting Services and Disability Communication Access Board. Additional support is provided by Māhū Mix and Hercules Interpreting. CEUs are processed through Arizona RID.

This virtual workshop explores how military occupation and political history shape life in Hawaiʻi today—whether as Indigenous Kānaka or as members of Pasifika diaspora, plantation communities, transplants, or the military. Gigi (she/they), who holds a Master’s in Political Science with a certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, will guide participants through facilitated discussion, journal prompts, and short presentations grounded in lived experience as a Kānaka ʻŌiwi wahine.
