February's Empowerment Series features Katilyn Mielke.
Did you know that February is Low Vision and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) Awareness month?
Join us in a featured presenation, with Kaitlyn Mielke. In this one hour empowerment session, we will learn about what it means to be Low Vision and RP. Through this presenation we will learn about some of the assumptions people make, and how we can be better community people, employers, co workers, and advocates when discussing inclusion of individiduals who have Low Vision and RP. Come to learn, ask questions and leave with knowledge of a topic we do not often discuss. Empower yourself.

Kaitlyn's Bio:
A lifetime arts and theatre aficionado, Kaitlyn Mielke has dabbled in multiple disciplines of the arts and theater world. As a Deafblind writer/actor, she enjoys being behind the curtain as a consultant to sign language interpreting teams for touring Broadway shows and advising theaters by providing insight into theater accessibility for Deaf & Deafblind patrons. She is known as the “whole package deal” in the theater community, as she provides insight from multiple intersectionalities including Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deafblind, Deaf + low vision, interpreter, actor, and theatermaker. This unique collection of perspectives allows her to advocate for access from all aspects of theatre making.
Kaitlyn grew up with a Deaf identity before being diagnosed with Usher Syndrome type1 soon after her first year of college. Usher Syndrome is a genetic condition that causes deafness and progressive vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP). It has not stopped Kaitlyn from pursuing her passions in the arts and theater world. Instead, she learned to adapt and create workarounds to make it possible for her to not only participate but to thrive. Those accommodation workarounds oftentimes end up benefiting everyone involved, not just her. She currently works as a freelance accessibility contractor with multiple arts & theater organizations on captioning and descriptive transcription projects; and with Minnesota Commission of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing as a contractor for writing and accessibility projects.
